The one line to keep

Your thought is neither good nor bad. It simply works.

Haanel makes a level-headed point that prevents a lot of magical thinking: thought is neither good nor bad. It is a power that works. If it is constructive and harmonious, it builds; if it is destructive, it damages — including you. Good and evil are not entities warring in the sky; they are the results of the direction of your thinking. Then the practical instruction: if you want to visualise a different environment, picture the whole thing until it is familiar.
Why this matters — Part 16
This is the level for the person who has lost something and is sure joy left with it. Haanel's sentence is almost clinical: things are effects. If your happiness is fastened to an object, a person, a job or a number, it is a hostage. He is not asking you to want less — he is telling you where joy actually lives, so that no single loss can take all of it. Sentimental? No. It's better security.

Study questions for this sublevel

Haanel put a review question at the end of every part. Answer out loud first — the recall is what moves it into memory.

157. Why is this so?

Because thought is spiritual and therefore creative. To consciously control thought is therefore to control circumstances, conditions, environment and destiny.

158. What is the source of all evil?

Destructive thinking.

159. What is the source of all good?

Scientific correct thinking.

Haanel's own words — points 24–30

Quoted exactly from The Master Key System (1912, public domain). The translation above is ours; this is his.

24

It is neither good nor bad, it simply is.

25

Our ability to differentiate it into form is our ability to manifest good or evil.

26

Good and evil are therefore not entities; they are simply words which we use to indicate the result of our actions, and these actions are in turn determined by the character of our thought.

27

If our thought is constructive and harmonious, we manifest good; if it is destructive and discordant, we manifest evil.

28

If you desire to visualize a different environment, the process is simply to hold the ideal in mind, until your vision has been made real. Give no thought to persons, places or things; these have no place in the absolute; the environment you desire will contain everything necessary; the right persons, and the right things will come at the right time and to the right place.

29

It is sometimes not plain how character, ability, attainment, achievement, environment and destiny can be controlled through the power of visualization, but this is an exact scientific fact.

30

You will readily see that what we think determines the quality of mind, and that the quality of mind in turn determines our ability and mental capacity, and you can readily understand that the improvement in our ability will naturally be followed by increase in attainment and a greater control of circumstances.
