The one line to keep

Give your mind somewhere pleasant to go, in full detail.

The exercise: take your seat, relax, and mentally construct a place with pleasant associations — buildings, grounds, trees, friends, everything complete. Your mind will wander to everything else first, and that is expected. Persistence wins. You are not indulging a daydream; you are teaching your mind that it can hold a chosen picture, which every later exercise builds on.
Why this matters — Part 5
When life has been grim for a while, your imagination starts producing only disaster footage — it rehearses the worst automatically. You can't just switch that off; you have to give it somewhere else to go. A pleasant mental picture is not escapism. It is retraining the projector. And it is the smallest possible first step for a person who can't yet imagine a good future: start with a good room.

Study question for this sublevel

Haanel put a review question at the end of every part. Answer out loud first — the recall is what moves it into memory.

50. Upon what is the possession of power contingent?

Upon a proper use of the power already in our possession.

Haanel's own words — points 30–30

Quoted exactly from The Master Key System (1912, public domain). The translation above is ours; this is his.

30

Now, go to your room, take the same seat, the same position as heretofore, and mentally select a place which has pleasant associations. Make a complete mental picture of it, see the buildings, the grounds, the trees, friends, associations, everything complete. At first, you will find yourself thinking of everything under the sun, except the ideal upon which you desire to concentrate. But do not let that discourage you. Persistence will win, but persistence requires that you practice these exercises every day without fail.
