The one line to keep

What you entertain, you get more of.

Every living thing grows the same way. Money grows in a working account. Muscle grows under load. Trust grows with attention. Mind is no different: the things you think about most are the things that multiply. Haanel opens with this because everything else in the course rests on it. Read it as a description of how the mind works, not as a reward for being good.
Why this matters to you
You are not starting from zero. You are starting from whatever has been growing in you — and you can change what that is.

Study questions for this sublevel

Haanel put a review question at the end of every part. Answer out loud first — the recall is what moves it into memory.

2. Upon what does all possession depend?

All possession is based on consciousness.

10. What is the source of all powers?

The source of all power is the world within, the Universal Fountain of Supply, the Infinite Energy of which each individual is an outlet.

Haanel's own words — points 1–5

Quoted exactly from The Master Key System (1912, public domain). The translation above is ours; this is his.

1

That much gathers more is true on every plane of existence and that loss leads to greater loss is equally true.

2

Mind is creative, and conditions, environment and all experiences in life are the result of our habitual or predominant mental attitude.

3

The attitude of mind necessarily depends upon what we think. Therefore, the secret of all power, all achievement and all possession depends upon our method of thinking.

4

This is true because we must "be" before we can "do," and we can "do" only to the extent which we "are," and what we "are" depends upon what we "think."

5

We cannot express powers that we do not possess. The only way by which we may secure possession of power is to become conscious of power, and we can never become conscious of power until we learn that all power is from within.

This week's exercise

The Silent Sit (Part One)

Pick a room where you can be alone and undisturbed. Same room, same seat each day if you can manage it.

See all steps
Sit with it

Guided stillness timer

The sit is the whole foundation of the course: still body, watched breath, no phone. Pick five minutes if fifteen feels like a hill.

Open the timer
